the subtle inflections of the english language - 04:34 PM
(filed under 'smiley')
sometimes, although i'm not sure why it does, it suprises me how much a four year old can understand. especially insights gained just by osmosis.
smiley was writing something & i was helping him by spelling out the words. usually, when i spell something, as most people probably do, i'll do it all of the letters of the word said with a fairly even toned inflection, then the last letter said with a downward inflection to indicate that i've finished spelling the word.
on this occasion, perhaps i was distracted by doing more than one thing at a time, & i toned all the letters of the word the same, maybe not realising that i'd come to the last letter of the word until i said it. smiley noticed & came up to me & told me that i had to 'say the last letter different' & he gave an example of it, giving it a downwards inflection.
it was funny & cute & sort of took me by surprise. they pick up these things without us even knowing it. i promised him that i'd try to do it properly from now on. hehe.
