dead cat - 01:28 PM

yesterday, when i was on the way to rudi & audrey's place to pick up smiley after a sleep over to take him to an easter monday fair, i drove past a dead cat right in the middle of the road.
it was pretty obviously already dead, but i didn't want the poor thing to get all mashed by cars. it was on the painted line in the middle of the road, so it probably wouldn't have been squished, but if someone didn't see it as they were changing lanes, they might have run over it.
so i stopped the car & backed up a bit to go & get it.
i guess it was hit in the head, because when the traffic finally abated enough for me to go out into the middle of the road, i saw that one of its eyes had sort of popped half way out. yick. poor cat.
it must have happened a few hours earlier (maybe in the early morning) because when i picked it up by the legs it was already stiff. it was kind of gross when i heard, or maybe just felt, a cracking sound in one paw (around its ankle if cats have those) as i lifted it. not sure if it was just clicking or actually breaking, but it grossed me out, regardless.
i took it over to the side of the road & said a little prayer as i drove off. it looked in fairly good health, so it may have belonged to someone, but it wasn't wearing a collar. wherever it was from, i'm glad it wasn't going to be turned into minced cat. i'm not a big fan of cats, but no dead creature deserves to be desecrated quite like that.
