space, the planets & volcanoes - 09:40 AM
(filed under 'smiley')

smiley's currently very much into certain things at the moment & so i thought i'd document it here so that if he asks me when he's older, i can look back & tell him how old he was when he was into these things.

currently, it's space & the planets, & also volcanoes.

he love-love-loves playing with goole earth. he's made what must be hundreds of placemarks all over google earth & has asked me to name some of them with 'coralie's & riley's & nanna's & poppy's & hansel's & gretel's & nansel's & gransel's house - ..' & then called it a name that he's made up, such as 'kuntz' or some other such strange name.

he loves drawing pictures of all the planets & knows all of their names by heart. he pointed to each one on a poster once & told me which one was which. he got them all correct.

he's also been drawing volcanoes (or putting them together with pieces of paper which he's drawn & then had them cut out) & telling me all about what's inside a volcano & how the lava & the smoke, etc, comes out.

there's a video online about pictures taken with the hubble telescope which he loves to watch. it shows heaps of other solar systems, as well as our own.

i have no idea if this current obsession will last, but it's great to see him so enjoying learning about these things.

My almost 5 year old loves Google Earth too - she and her daddy spend time in the evening while I'm putting the 3-year-old to bed looking around it. Their current favourite subject is shipwrecks, but she is also very interested in volcanoes, earthquakes etc. Her other pet subject at the moment is dinosaurs.
