there are ways in which smiley definitely takes after me.

one particular way of showing it that i've only just noticed in the last few days is pretty funny.

this is what happened: the other day, i put a plate with two pieces of toast on it in front of him on his little table in the lounge room. the two pieces of toast were sitting the same way on the plate, i.e. with the top sides of the toast, the top of the loaf, facing the same way. the plate, however, i put down so that the tops of the toast were facing to the side, not upright. smiley then turned the plate around so that the pieces of toast were facing upright to him.

i thought it was pretty funny at the time.

so i placed the plate sideways on purpose this morning, since i'd only seen it once & i wasn't sure if it was just a one off thing or if it was a conscious effort on his part. he did it again. he turned the plate so that the toast was facing right side forward.

i had to walk away so that i didn't laugh out loud right there & then. the thing is, though, that i find it so funny because i do the same sort of things myself. in fact, i would ordinarily place the plate in front of him so that it was already facing right side forward. i guess the first time i placed the plate sideways (& noticed him turning it to face the right way around) was just an accident.

i've always had what i like to describe as 'an overdeveloped sense of symmetry'. i always figured it was a learned behaviour, but i guess it's an inborn thing, because he's been doing that sort of thing from a very young age. you can see an example of that on one of my flickr pics where he lined up some packets of gum all in a row & another one where he was lining up some pieces from an activity book.
