door all fixed, almost - 10:01 AM

i don't think i blogged about this when it actually happened. weeks ago, like about fourteen weeks ago or something, when i was houseminding at suzanne's house, one of the smoke alarms in my house went off in the middle of the night.
my neighbours knew i was away & so they called the fire brigade to come & check it out. as it turns out, it was just a false alarm: the smoke alarm had malfunctioned.
apparently it took four firemen to break through the screen door to get inside. after having the screen door installed, i never bothered to lock the wooden door inside, since if someone had got through a triple lock screen door, they'd certainly not have any trouble getting through the simple tab lock on the wooden door. no sense in having both things broken.
it was just as well, too, because the door was damaged enough so that it didn't lock anymore. if they'd had to break through the wooden door, there would have been no way for me to lock up the house.
it was also just as well, because it took almost the same number of weeks for the real estate agent to arrange for it to get repaired. i would have chased them up with more vigour if i wasn't able to lock up the house at all, but as it was, i had to call about six times to get anything happening.
so the door is now fixed, but there's one last thing which needs doing to make it completely secure. the piece of wood up the side of the door which had little metal bits put on which the locks are then pushed through, was splintered in a few places when the firies got it open. so it needs replacing. i called the real estate agent & very graciously thanked them for getting the door repaired (i managed to keep the sarcasm out of my voice & also didn't say 'finally getting the door repaired') & asked if they could get someone to replace the piece of wood. we'll see how long it takes them to do this. if i don't hear anything by monday i'll be calling them again.
i'm impressed at how secure the door was. if it took four firies & a crow bar to get through the door, with them not at all trying to be quiet, then i'm feeling very sure that it would keep out an intruder who would not want to draw any attention to himself.
