driving like maniacs in abu dhabi - 09:01 AM
(filed under 'general')

i remember when we were living in bahrain, my experiences with driving in bahrain were kind of scary. abu dhabi is very similar.

worse, though, is that i'm not the one in control of the vehicle, so i feel like i'm putting my life in the hands of the taxi driver every time we get into a taxi. it's very scary.

when you're the one doing the driving, at least you know when you're going to brake & you know that you're paying attention. when someone else is driving, you can only hope they're going to brake in time (barely, & with screeching tyres) & that they're paying attention (enough to avoid drivers cutting across into their lane without indicating).

they drive so damn fast here, too. i was looking out for the speed limit signs today so i could see exactly how much faster our taxi driver was going. only twice the speed of the limit, as it turns out. he was going 120 km/hr (74 m/hr)—as was pretty much everyone else—in a 60 km/hr (37 m/hour) zone. it's really quite scary. especially when the cars in front are braking & the driver continues to accellerate.

i think i prefer to be the one driving, even in the scary conditions.
