smiley's really into the solar system & the planets. he has been for a long time. he just loves all of it. he knows all the planets & in what order they go (he knows it better than i do); he can recognise the planets by sight from a poster or a book; he knows which ones are bigger & which ones are smaller. he's incredible. even if he hadn't just turned five years old, it'd still be amazing how much he knows about it all.
while i was away in abu dhabi, rudi & audrey saw the ads on tv for the weekly (maybe fortnightly) magazine that you can buy that's all about the solar sytem. with each issue, they provide you with the pieces to build an orrery: a model of the solar system. they bought him the first issue.
he absolutely loves it. he's been carrying around everywhere with him what we've built so far. we went to mrs flannery's (healthy/organic produce store) the other day & he was walking up to everyone, staff & customers alike, saying, 'have a look at this!' & telling them all about it if only they stood still long enough to listen.
he's very excited about it. since he loves playing with that we've got so far, i've decided to buy two issues at one time. one that he can carry around & actively play with & one that we can either put away, or build as we go that will remain on a shelf & not be touched for when he's older & still interested enough to want to play with a working, unscratched, model.
he watched the ad so many times over (the one i linked to a few days ago wanting to save a copy on my computer) & even made me convert it to a format that i can use on my palm so that he can show other people when we're out.
he's a funny boy. i love that he gets into things in such a big way.
