why are they putting toxins in our water? - 04:22 PM
(filed under 'healthy living')

anna bligh, queensland's premier, decided to put fluoride in our water supply, despite massive public objection to it when the idea was brought forward. so much for a democracy. perhaps she was feeling left out because every other state in australia has had fluoridated water for many many years. hmm. you know the saying, 'if your friends jumped off a bridge ..', etc?

i followed a link to a site which is about equipment for dosing water with fluoride. on that page, it says this about fluoride (italics added by me for emphasis):

'Fluoridation of potable water has long been an accepted practice for the prevention of tooth decay. Water is generally treated with either:

* Fluorosilicic acid (commercially available as a 22% solution)
* Sodium Silicofluoride (Powder)
* Sodium Fluoride (Powder)

While each product has associated risks with regards to handling, fluorosilicic acid is a particularly aggressive and hazardous chemical and requires specific operator training and awareness. In addition, specific system design, pareticularly with regard to equipment flushing, also needs to be considered. On the other hand, powdered products present their own health issues, specifically with regard to management of the dust problem when handling. This normally requires a reasonably complex and costly dust extraction/air filtration system. All of these OH&S issues can be overcome, but generally at a cost, which makes the application of fluoride to small water treatment facilities uneconomic.'

it sort of reminds me of a baker who worked at an industrial bakery (you know, like for one of the big bread companies) once telling me about the anti-moulding stuff that they were not allowed to touch or breathe that they put into the bread ..

.. oh, but it's okay to put that crap into stuff we consume!!

this is why i got myself a reverse osmosis water filter (the only thing that will take out fluoride. if you're told that any other filter will take it out, then you're being lied to) & why i don't buy supermarket bread.

They're trying to do that to our water too, and it's been an ongoing battle. Our battle though, is with the council, not the government, which in some ways makes it more likely it won't happen. I hope it doesn't.

I'm thankful for it. I know what a difference it makes to teeth. Having grown up unfluoridated, and seeing fluoridated teeth, the difference is astounding.

Handling huge amounts of any chemicals has hugely different risks than ingesting small amounts. Yes, I know it's still a chemical, but honestly, I don't care. Hopefully now that the water *is* fluoridated Kristian will grow up with stronger teeth than his sisters have.

I'm sorry to say it, but I also disagree on this one. As Melanie so correctly points out, just because something is hazardous in concentrated form, that does not make it unsafe for use in correct (managed) portions. We ingest all sorts of things every day that in large doses would harm or kill us; some of them compounded in a lab, some naturally occurring (and let's not forgot, lots of chemicals do occur naturally, although I grant you, not this particular form of fluoride). Or, to put it another way, lots of things are poisons if used incorrectly or to excess; that does not mean we should shy away from their proper use.

At the end of the day it's a cost-benefit analysis, and the evidence from the preponderance of the developed world that does fluoridate water is that the benefits clearly outweigh the costs. Just my $0.02 worth, anyway.

What worries me far more than fluoride in the water is all the antibiotics and growth hormones given to the animals we eat and the insecticide spraying of crops. After all, fluoride does occur naturally in water in some areas but antibiotics etc do not. However, as a sixty+ year old, I have in my life been warned of radiation from tv screens, ultra violet from the sun, fumes from cars, micro wave ovens and viruses from outer space. I'm still here!

why do you want to take the
fluoride out of your water? the info you posted is about the people who are responsible for actually putting the fluoride in the water, and not about what the health effects are for the "end user". is there any well supported evidence that fluoridated water has adverse affects on the population that outweighs the benefit it provides?
