sunglasses - 06:12 PM
monkey-see monkey-do, right? absolutely!
today, while smiley was sitting in his car seat, he was playing with his little sunglasses & his hat. i caught him using his cloth hat to clean his sunnies, just as shroom or i might use a shirt or some other cloth thing to clean our spectacles (we both wear glasses all the time).
sometimes when i see smiley trying something new, you can see he still needs practice, but he looked as though he'd been doing this for years just as shroom & i have. it was so funny!

smiley grumpy - 12:13 PM
smiley has been a real grumpy-bum the last few days. yesterday & the day before he had a bit of a fever, but he's been grumpy before that & he's still grumpy today. i guess it must be related to whatever it is that was causing the fever. i can't see any obvious signs of why he's so unsettled, so i've just been comforting him as much as i can & trying not to be driven crazy by the almost constant whining.
aside from the grumpiness, it's been a bit more diffcult than usual for me since there's no one else for smiley to turn to for his usual needs & wants with shroom being away. having shroom's mum here will be good, since there'll then be two people between which smiley can divide his 'loving attentions'.
there could be one other reason that he might be grumpy & it's to do with bodily functions, so if that sort of thing grosses you out, stop reading here.

the wiggles site - 02:27 PM
smiley has a wiggles book which he's enjoyed for a while now & he also recognises them on tv when we've happened to have it on. every now & then he asks for them ("giggles!") so i thought i'd buy a dvd for him so we can watch them at other times, too.
i just now looked up the wiggles' website, in particular the games section. it's rather good. smiley's out there watching the wiggles dvd at the moment, so i didn't turn the volume up too loud while looking at the games otherwise i'll never get him off my computer! lol!

smiley's sharing some raisin toast with me & keeps asking for more (he calls it 'raynin' toast) but he's just eating the raisins out of each piece & giving the rest of the bread to the dog! what a waste of good raisin toast!

smiley just put his shorts on all by himself. well, not totally by himself, i did help to straight them out a bit when his foot was getting stuck, but aside from that, he did it all.
they ended up on back to front & his (very cute little) bum was hanging out, but he did so well that we showed daddy. hehe.

toilet training - 07:26 PM
after reading about an amazing concept, nappy-free babies (sad that it's amazing to us in the western world but common elsewhere), i decided to start deprogramming smiley that his clothes (i.e. nappies) are the place for going to the toilet. he's a really quick learner!
after reading about how most of the world show their babies the right place to go to the toilet from almost day one, it's no wonder we have so much trouble toilet training when we teach them to go in their pants for two years then wonder why they're confused!
i'll be mentioning bodily functions from here on, so if you can't handle that sort of thing, stop reading now.

smiley can count to two. if he has two of something, he'll point to them in turn, saying, "one .. two!" .. & of course, it's very cute.

smiley's 'nan-koo' has graduated to more of an 'ang-koo' & he now also says 'you're welcome' afterwards. (must eventually teach him that the person he's saying 'thank you' to is the one that says 'you're welcome'.) he says it like 'or com-com'.
so cute.

nappy diving - 12:28 PM
eww gross. we just had our first nappy diving experience. i was about to put smiley in the laundry tub (the usual way i do it) to clean him up after he'd filled his nappy & before i knew it he'd put his hand down the back of his nappy & was showing me his fingers.
he now knows a whole lot of new words meaning something awful: gross, foul, disgusting, yucky.

smiley's been learning to say 'thank you'. he says it like, "nan-koo". it's rather cute. his 'please' is getting better, too. he says it like, "pwreese?" now.

smiley seems to be learning colours. a few days ago he was pointing to a pink pencil & saying, "pink!" & this morning while we were still in bed he was pointing to the white stripes on the cat on the pillow saying, "white!"
his language skills are advancing at a rate of knots, as they tend to at this age. he'll try out new words immediately as we say them & sometimes will come out with words which we're sure we haven't tried to teach him but i suppose he's picked up as we use them in everyday conversation.

smiley seems to have learned, all on his own, how to burp on demand. he was doing it the other day & i thought he just needed to burp a lot until he did it several times in a row & then again when i asked him to. a night or so ago all three of us were sitting around on the couch & had an impromptu burping competition. smiley thought it was hilarious. actually, so did shroom & i.
