what not to crochet - 06:29 AM
a site that demonstrates the maxim that i live by: just because it can be crocheted, doesn't mean it should be.
what not to crochet. i love it!

clowns are scary - 06:25 AM
so it's not just me that doesn't like clowns. i'll cross the street to avoid a clown.
for me, personally, i think it's the painted face. i don't like not being able to see someone's face. it's like they're trying to hide something.
a clown nose only, i can deal with, but the funny hair & the painted face .. no thanks.

wanton destruction - 09:03 AM
they're quite old, but they're still worth watching. daniel bowen (with help from some local kids at a skate ramp) destroys an old, broken vcr & an old desktop computer.

aussie kids photo festival - 05:28 AM
i wrote about this aussie kids photo festival last year sometime. it's on again!
smiley's not been into photography for a while (might possibly coincide with me not taking my camera out for a while, too), but i'll be bringing his little camera with us to woodford, so i might encourage him to take a few pics while we're there.

music by renee & jeremy - 03:21 PM
i bought a gorgeous cd the other day, it's a big world, by renee & jeremy. i got it from that link, too. cd baby, they're called. the (international) shipping was really fast. i was quite impressed. the postage price was very reasonable, too. they give you a 'no plastic' option to make the package smaller & keep the postage down. i chose that option, but the cd seems to come in its own cardboard fold-out sleeve with no plastic case anyway.
take a listen to the sample songs on the link. they'e such gorgeous songs. beautiful lullaby style ballads. really sweet.

it feels rather strange to pee like a man - 11:17 AM
smiley & i are going camping at the woodford folk festival in december. i remembered the really long queues for the women's toilets on our overnight camping trip last year. i also had the thought of having to get up & make the long trek from the tent to the toilets in the middle of the night, all the while being afraid of leaving smiley asleep in the tent.
a while ago, i saw this thing online: the whiz. i decided to get the whiz plus version. it arrived in yesterday's mail & i collected it from the post office this morning. i just gave it a try now & boy did it feel weird to pee standing up. rotfl!!
it's going to come in mighty handy while camping. i guess i'll get used to how odd it feels. hehe.

the mighty adventures of bob - 02:43 PM
i was just looking up my tupperware can opener online & found someone had written a very amusing review of it. it was called part 4 of the mighty adventures of bob, so i assumed there would also be a part 1, 2 & 3. there was. i found them all.
if you've got a few minutes to read some funny & not-bad-at-all writing, check it out:

australian souveniers made in australia - 11:28 AM
what a shame angie & i didn't see these before she bought some souveniers for her kids from the place in the city where almost everything is made in china (only the genuine aboriginal art was made here, i think). amazingly, this place makes its souveniers right here in oz, in fact, not that far from me.
mind you, something made with wool isn't all that unique to them since there are more sheep in new zealand than there are people.

brilliant article on society today - 01:12 PM
i just finished reading a really good (& rather long) article which deals with our western society & how it's part of the cause for the sad state of affairs that we're currently in with unhappy, overworked parents, kids with no goals in life & no sense of responsibilty & the so-called generation gap where we no longer appreciated our elders.
read home economincs, sustainablility & the "mommy wars".

tru-breast - 06:32 AM
someone on the extended breadtfeeding yahoo group list sent this link through. it's pretty funny & very clever. i particularly love the creative use of intentional mispellings/creative spelling of the features.
tru-breast!

aussie kids photo festival - 08:49 AM
oh, how cool & cute! i just came across this site where they feature photographs taken by kids from age three to seven years old. it's the aussie kids photo festival.
from the brief look that i've had so far, they run a competition once a year. i love this idea, especially now that smiley's more interested in taking pictures with his cute little camera (& has his own flickr account which i signed up for him to have a place to upload his pics). what a great way to encourage kids to be creative!
if he has some particularly good ones by next year, perhaps i'll submit a few.
there's a really cute article about it here on nine msn news. that's how i found out about it.

sharing the love - 12:43 PM
i have an idea for sharing the love with random strangers. i've started a group at flickr to try to collect a whole lot of specially printed moo cards to hand out to people in the brisbane city mall. the back of the cards will have just the words:
you are beautiful
.. printed on them. the idea is to make someone's day. make people feel happy about themselves. share the love, you know? one happy person will make another happy person & another happy person .. & so on.
some members of the new group which i created at flickr have suggested that it would be cool to have more than just me doing it in the brisbane city mall, but to have others around the world doing it, too. yes! that's exactly the way to share the love! i really hope this takes off.
so this is the 'sharing the love' with moo cards group at flickr.
if you're a flickr member, maybe you can tell your contacts about it. if not, maybe you can join flickr (it's free) & help spread the word or take part in the discussion or something.
anyway, i thought i'd plug it here to help spread the word. i know i don't get huge numbers of hits, but every little bit helps, right?

the customer isn't always right - 11:03 PM
this is a fantastic article on how people acting like customers can be incredibly rude, disrespectful & plain old mean.
the woman who writes it actually says something to people who are acting like spoiled little children. fortunately, i don't come across that sort of behaviour very often, but i think i might take a leaf out of her book & start to do the same when i feel someone is being so rude & selfish at the expense of someone else.
it's really worth a read. it's not that long, but it makes you think.
having worked most of my life in customer service jobs (although mostly i've been annoyed by customers who are just dismissive rather than outright rude) one of my life mottos is that i will never be a 'customer', i'll simply be a person in a shop. i also always try to give the person behind the counter (or on the other end of the phone) a smile & a friendly "how are you?"
