lost his first baby tooth yesterday - 10:48 AM
smiley lost his first baby tooth yesterday while he was at my mum's place!
he had two loose teeth at the bottom front. one was much looser than the other one, but the one that was less wiggly was the one that fell out! that surprised me. i really thought the extremely wiggly one would fall out first. it can't be too far behind.
i've never tried to convince him that santa clause was real, but i like the idea of the tooth fairy. the tooth fairy is fun. so we wrote a note to the tooth fairy asking if he could keep the tooth, but he still wanted 'a bit of money, please.' so cute. 
once he was asleep, i took the note & put some coins in the same plastic bag as the tooth. he forgot about it when he woke up this morning, but after i had another look at his tooth, i reminded him & he looked under his pillow to claim his money.
my baby boy is growing up.

smiey just sang 'happy birthday' to me because it's my birthday today. i asked him if he knew how old i was & then i told him that i'm now 37.
he responded with, 'wow!! soon you'll be a hundred!'
as if i didn't feel old enough already. lol!!

there are so many things within walking distance from here, but it seems the one thing that's missing is a park for smiley to play in. i can't see one within cooee looking at google maps. bummer.

smiley is reading! i knew he was getting good, but just now he read this tool tip in google earth all on his own: 'view in google maps'.
wow. two wiggly teeth & now reading! he really is growing up. *sigh*
now, if only we could get past this jekkyl & hyde stage where one moment he loves me to pieces & won't get off me & the next he's really annoyed at me for no apparent reason. no in between, just bouncing between those two states. *another sigh*

not just a false alarm wiggly tooth! - 06:17 PM
almost a year ago i wrote about smiley having a slightly wiggly tooth. that was a false alarm since nothing ever happened with it. or maybe it was just a really early sign.
yesterday, while he was at the markets with me & eating a hot dog, he complained that his teeth were hurting. he pointed to the ones that were hurting & this time he really does have a very wiggly tooth! the two bottom teeth are wiggly, but the one on the right (my right, looking at him in the face) is super wiggly. i reckon it'll come out within a week.
he really is growing up. my sweet little boy is losing his first tooth!

i broke my egg from smiley - 11:00 AM
oh, no! i just accidentally knocked the egg that smiley drew on onto the ground & broke it. ages ago he drew a heart on it & told me that it's so that we know we love each other. i put holes in it & blew the insides out so i could keep it for a long time.
now i'm sad. 
i'm glad that i got a good pic of it, at least.

even i, as his mother, am disgusted - 12:31 AM
warning! do not read the following if you are eating or easily grossed out by vomit!
oh, man. smiley just spewed in his sleep. he literally had a massive spew while he was still asleep. i mean that he didn't even wake up. he lay there, asleep. spewed. spewed some more. spewed even more. & then more again, just for good measure, & stayed asleep the whole time.
he'd eaten some fish fingers today & that seems to be mostly what it was made up of. yes, that is as digusting as it sounds & it smells even worse. trust me on this.
i stripped him off, t-shirt & shorts covered in spew, tidied up the bed, also covered in spew, tidied up his hair, covered in spew, & he stayed asleep the whole time.
it's times like this that i'm glad he still sleeps next to me. he was so noiseless about it, that if he'd done it in his own bed, down the hall, he'd be rolling around in it right now, still sleeping. it was disgusting enough waking up to it happening right beside me .. but i can't imagine how it would have been going in there in the morning to find it spread around absolutely all over his bed & himself. *shudder*
i've tidied up the bed as well as i can, tidied up him as well as i can, & put his clothes, the towels i used to clean up with, & his pillow case straight into the wash. i'm going to put them through a quick cycle now to get rid off all that disgustingness & then put them through another sixty cycles.
the smell was so bad that i couldn't even bear to rinse out the stuff in the laundry sink before putting it into the wash as fast as i possibly could. (i was dry-wretching all the way down the stairs to the laundry.) i also put a good splash of eucalytpus oil in there to try to combat the stench. i wiped him down with the eucalyptus oil, & his hair (& he still slept on), as well as the bed, too. there is now a towel under him & over the wet patch which is as clean as i can get it.
after two previous nights of not enough sleep (two nights ago there was a loud altercation outside my window, last night i couldn't get to sleep after he had an allergic reaction to an ant bite .. i'll tell more about that later) i've concluded that this is definitely 'not a chance in hell of getting any decent sleep week'.
excuse any possible typos i missed: it's after midnight, i was woken rudely from a deep slumber by disgusting spew, & i wrote most of this without my glasses.

smiley loves looking up things on youtube about the universe & the planets. he's found himself one just now, sort of on topic, which is over 22 minutes long called, 'origin of life 1. life came from other planets. myth of the organic soup & abiogenesis'.
he's 15 minutes into it & he hasn't said a word since he started watching it; he's completely wrapt in it.
go & have a look at it on youtube & see if you think a typical five year old would be as absorbed in it as smiley is.
sometimes it completely spins me out how clever he is.

smiley just chucked a massive tantrum.
he was thirsty & asked for a drink of water. since my bag has everything in its place, etc, i got up to get my water bottle out of it for him, the one i almost always carry in my bag for when we're out & get thirsty. means we avoid having to buy unhealthy drinks. but he didn't want that. he wanted his water bottle from upstairs, the one i'd bought him from woodford which is now the bedtime water bottle in case he wants a drink in the middle of the night.
he wanted me to go upstairs & get it for him. i refused, since he's perfectly capable of going up there & getting it himself. the tanty started.
he said he was too thirsty to go up & get it. so i said he could have the water from my water bottle, but he said he wanted more than that. i said i'd refill it if he drank it all. he responded that he didn't want that much. all of this was said with tears streaming down the face & much whinging.
i still refused, on priniple now, to go & get it for him. then much grabbing & pushing around of the chair at his computer desk ensued, followed by throwing himself on the floor, all accompanied by very dramatic coughing & choking noises & telling me that he was so thirsty that he'd die if i didn't go & get his water bottle.
by this stage i was actually laughing. to quote a friend of mine, this kid can skip nida & go straight to 'neighbours'.
i offered to meet him halfway, so to speak, & that i'd walk upstairs with him, as long as he grabbed his water bottle himself. still he refused.
this went on for about fifteen minutes. no joke. i refused to budge.
eventually, he decided that he would walk up there with me, & while he calmed down a touch as we were going up the stairs, he still threw himself around on the floor & the bed a bit, with more crying & whinging.
finally he had his drink (fortunately, he didn't actually die from thirst beforehand) & then decided that he still liked me & we lay on the bed & cuddled for a little while.
score: mummy, 1. kid, 0.
well, actually, he wins, too, since this is hopefully part of him learning to be a decent human being.

he's a funny boy - 10:18 AM
smiley made two jokes yesterday which both cracked me up.
the first one was one he said he wanted to tell daddy. so i called smiley's dad & smiley tells him that he wants to tell him a joke. he said, 'earth is bigger than neptune.'
my boy is definitely a nerd. lol!
mind you, i found it kind of funny, too, so i guess he's in good company. hehe.
the second joke was later in the afternoon. i'd bought him some sticker sheets that are designed to be used on a calendar, so they say things on them like 'doctor', 'dentist', 'vet', etc. one of them said 'anniversary', before asking me what that word meant, he told me, 'you know, sometimes when you're asleep, i get up in the middle of the night & do anniversary.'
that one really cracked me up. what a cheeky boy he can be. lol!

another hormonal shift - 01:18 PM
smiley seems to be going through a hormonal shift similar to the one he went through about eight months ago. fortunately, it doesn't seem to be as extreme.
it's really hard to handle. he's obviously feeling horrible & frustrated & doesn't seem to realise what a horrible, grumpy pain in the bum he's being, but by the same token, it doesn't mean that i can let him get away with that sort of behaviour.
i'm getting mighty sick of telling him off &/or asking him to at least try to be nice. i hope this one doesn't last as long as the previous one. it's slowly killing me.

oh my goodness!
smiley was just hand writing a short note at the end of a longer one (all except that last bit dictated by him, written by me) written to the stars & the planets, etc (as you do), & he used a possessive apostrophe, correctly, all by himself!!
he then tried to put one on a plural, but just the fact that he thought about punctuation (& an apostrophe! my most favourite of all the misused punctuation marks) all by himself, just blows me away. i'm so damn impressed!
also, he wrote the apostrophe upside down, so that the tail was going up into the air, instead of downwards, but either way, i'm still amazed & impressed & totally proud.
in case you've forgotten, he only turned five last september.
