within two weeks - 08:28 AM
it's been freezing cold over the past two months, but in the last two sundays at the markets, from having to wear seven layers of clothing (& i'm not joking in the least. i actually was wearing seven layers of clothing) just to keep warm standing still in the shade all day, i am now able to wear just jeans & a t-shirt with the occasional putting on of a light cardigan to protect from the cool wind.
i was actually really quite excited to not have to rug up so much that i was starting to feel like the michelan man. perhaps i'm just overjoyed easily, but it was one of the things which kept me happy all day.
it's amazing how quickly it's changed. when you get up ridiculously early every saturday & sunday morning, it tends to stick out in your mind when you have to concentrate so hard that early in the morning to think what layers have to go where on your body & in which order just to avoid freezing to death. so when those layers start changing—& so quickly—it also makes an impact.
seriously, it was a real drama just to keep warm every week. the saturday markets at kelvin grove weren't so bad because i'd get some sun during the day. there's often a bit of a stiff breeze blowing up by the afternoon, but having that sun (shining near me, if not actually on me) for most of the day made a real difference. on sunday though, at eagle street, my stall is tucked under the corner of a building. there is often a cool breeze blowing right by one half of my stall & the sun makes an appearance between the tall city buildings for only about an hour during the whole day. it was really horrible trying to keep warm in those conditions.
the temperatures were probably really lovely for some people who live further south & who are used to that sort of weather, but in brisbane, it's usually a lot warmer. brisbane hardly ever sells woollen clothing in the shops since we almost never need it, so when it gets so cold, we're simply not prepared for it. if i lived in melbourne, i'd have a full complement of woollen winter coats & jackets & pants to match any occasion. in brisbane, i had to do with jeans, thermal underwear, calf-high ugg boots & my various other layers. even with all of that, i was still so very cold all day. it was awful.
so that's why i'm so happy that the weather has turned so quickly.
give me a few months & i'll be complaining about trying to keep cool. lol!

rain stopped - 08:45 AM
well, the rain's stopped for now, but it's still overcast, so i guess that's good for keeping some of the much needed moisture in the earth, instead of the sun blaring down & drying it all up again.

rain! - 11:12 PM
it's been raining almost non-stop for twenty-four hours. that's brilliant!
water restrictions have been really severe for ages now & this rain is much-needed. it's the perfect sort of rain, too. soft, gentle, steady rain. a short but heavy downpour, usually typical of brisbane's summer weather, would be bad. it would just cause flooding & chaos, but hopefully this slow, persistant rain will give the ground a chance to soak in some of the water.
i'm surprised it's raining at all, really, because autumn & winter are usually brisbane's dry seasons.
let's hope that some of this rain is falling in the catchment areas to fill some of the increasingly empty reservoirs.

too damn hot - 11:30 AM
you know it's too hot when all you have to do is breathe to break into a dripping-down-your-body sweat. i'm not kidding. ergh.

humid - 08:36 AM
ergh. it's so humid today. you can barely stand up & walk around without having sweat dripping down your neck, let alone do some actual work type things, such as sweeping or cleaning.

ergh. hot & sticky - 01:52 PM
it's rather hot today. it says that the maximum for brisbane today was 27 degrees C (80.6 degrees F) but it feels hotter than that. i'm more inland, so it's probably closer to about 29C (84.2F) anyway.
i just had a sleep with smiley (i actually did fall asleep in his bed with him) & despite the cool breeze that finally kicked up & came through the window, it was a really hot & sticky sleep, complete with a very odd (although rather amusing) dream. lol!
(.. & this is just because i don't feel i've quite used enough brackets yet in the above text. heh.)

getting cooler - 07:17 AM
brrr. it's a bit chilly this morning. i might even have to put some long pants on if it doesn't begin to warm up soon!
nice that it's beginning to cool off.

storm - 01:11 PM
wow! you gotta love a good queensland storm. the kind that blows up in two minutes from nothing to doors slamming from the wind & having you literally running from window to window to close them because the rain is coming in horizontally, reaching all the way across the kitchen & getting the fridge wet.
.. & then five minutes later you wouldn't even know that it was there, except for the carnage inside the house being mopped up with a big beach towel & the tree branches & leaves which have been blown around outside.
it brought the temperature down ten degrees in about three minutes. the humidity might even ease up. it's been stinking hot & sweaty for a week now. mind you, the clouds will probably be gone & we'll all be sweltering again by four o'clock this afternoon.
shroom rides his bike around the mill to get from job to job. i hope he wasn't caught in the storm. he would have been blown over by it for sure.

heavier - 07:51 AM
ahh, rain, rain, wonderful rain. it's getting a bit heavier. this is good. this is very good. our grass might even go green! wow, what a novel concept: grass that is actually green.
rain! - 07:15 AM
yay! it's finally raining! i heard it through the early morning & when i woke up it was quite overcast. now it's raining a bit more.
shroom said last night that rain was forecast, but i said that i'd believe it when i saw it since we almost never get any of it. well, now i believe it.
let's hope there's enough to fill the tank, too. or at least top it up.

winter? - 07:27 AM
it's supposedly winter, & it has been really quite cold recently, down to freezing (zero degrees celcius, about thirty-two fahrenheit) most mornings. the last two evenings though, it's been quite warm & by the morning has been thirteen degrees (about fifty-five). strange weather.
June 20, 2004
windy - 12:49 PM
wow. it's really windy outside. it has been for the past few days, but today especially so. i wonder if it was as windy time time last year?

warm night again - 07:21 AM
it was another warm night last night. i not only threw off the doona, but i took my pajamas off in the middle of the night, too, after i was still lying there sweating. shroom disagreed & stayed rugged up until morning. it's funny how two people (well, three if you count smiley, but he can't tell me yet if he's hot or cold) can share the same bed but experience such differences in temperature. i guess it's all relative.

hot & cold - 10:54 AM
this type of weather annoys me. the type where you have to have your woolly jumpers out alongside your shorts & t-shirts because it gets freezing at night, but then warms up to over 30 degrees (86 in fahrenheit) again in the day.
i guess i shouldn't complain, because when it does stay cold during the day i'll probably wish it was still warm.
