behaving

why is it that when management are around, we have to all pretend that we're model employees? let me explain. i was at work at a past job at a service station & it was about that time of day that i needed to eat something, just a small snack to take me through to lunch time. so i was behind the counter, eating a small tub of custard & fruit. i was being good & polite about it, i wasn't waving it in people's faces or continuing to eat while i was serving customers. as soon as i'd see a customer heading towards the door, i'd put it down behind the counter & bring my full attention to them.

this particular day, the human resources manager happened to be hanging around, keeping an eye on a fairly major job that was being done outside. my boss happened to look over while i was eating. "what's that?" he asked in an accusing manner. i replied simply, "custard", wondering what his point was. he then proceeded to tell me that i shouldn't stand there eating in front of management (the human resources guy). i asked why & he explained that i should keep moving around as though i'm busy doing something. i told him that i understood his point & that i would indeed do that in future but that i also disagreed with him.

do managers never eat? i mean, why, when it's difficult enough to find time between customers to eat anyway, should i then stop eating to pretend that i'm busy doing something? managers aren't stupid, surely they don't think, when they see someone stopping for thirty seconds, that the one space in time they are witness to is absolutely representative of every other thirty seconds that you spend at work. if there was such a thing as a lunch break at my then work (to be fair, you are entitled to a lunch break, you just have to keep working during it .. gee, thanks), then if i was out the back having a proper lunch break, should i then jump up & hurry around like a chook with its head cut off just to make it look like i'm busy? oh please!

so many people tip-toe around management & treat them like delicate geniuses. it's the same with royalty, or the prime minister, or celebrities .. they're just people, for crying out loud. excuse the vulgarity of the expression, but they eat & shit just like the rest of us. yes, respect where respect is due, but not just for the sake of pretense.

i was sort of thinking about the celebrity thing the other day. i saw on the news that prince edward's wife is pregnant, and i was thinking that i couldn't imagine her doing such normal stuff like waiting and waiting and missing her period and peeing on the stick and stuff. i came to the conclusion it's because with celebrities, we see them doing things that are not 'normal' - attending galas and banquets and whatnot, so it's just so hard to also place them into our everyday normal types of situations too. picturing famous people doing such normal personal things like going to the toilet or brushing their teeth is a good way to remind ourselves that they're not *really* different to the rest of us.
