body piercing

why do some people find body piercing so abhorrent? i can understand that some can be a bit squeamish about having a hole in your body where there isn't usually one, but why do some people have such a hatred for it?

okay, i'm thinking of my parents as an example. actually, it's kind of funny, when i walked into my mum & dad's house with my then new belly button piercing, dad referred to it as my "mutilation". ha! if you don't laugh about it, you'll cry. at least they mostly still accept me even though they don't agree with the body piercing.

i don't understand how people can base their whole opinion of a person on one aspect of their physical appearance, especially when it's something they didn't previously know about, & then when they find out, their opinion of that person completely changes.

for instance, a private piercing, such as a nipple or some other genital type piercing. let me set the scene .. person 'a' (the bigot) meets person 'b' (the piercee). they get along fine. they have ordinary conversations, they may even have a beer or two together. one day person 'a' finds out that person 'b' has a piercing. let's say, for the sake of argument, that it's something as innocuous as a nipple piercing. suddenly person 'a' is horrified & now thinks (despite all their previously gleaned knowledge of person 'b') that person 'b' is a sicko, twisted, & perhaps even mentally deranged.

why??

according to all their prior knowledge, they were happy to hang with person 'b'. they would even have shared a cab with them. what right does person 'a' have to make such a judgement about person 'b' because of a choice they have made concerning their own body, that affects only themself.

people have holes poked in them for all sorts of reasons every day: blood tests, inoculations, anaesthesia, taking legal or illegal drugs. these can be rather unpleasant experiences with unpleasant side-effects. body piercing, on the other hand, makes you proud of your body. it claims your body to be truly your own. it gives you a feeling of independence & individuality.

i say, if you're going to have a hole poked in you, hang something pretty in it.

It started with ear piercings, and even that was frowned upon when girls started to have it done. Then came male ear piercing, and that was viewed negatively. Some people can't accept something new and different as okay, perhaps limited thinking. Personally, I feel it's a personal decision, like hairstyle and makeup. Some seek individuality through piercings. I say if it makes them feel good, go for it, but no one should judge what sort of person they are for their decision. It's just a hole! LOL

i can understand the 'eeew'-ishness from the point of view of imagining, for example, a nipple piercing.. i couldn't do it. but it's a totally physical sensation thing, you know? i don't have a problem with other people poking holes in their nipples.. kinda curious to what it looks like, actually *wink*

I agree, I love my piercings too! Right now I have my navel, tongue, and industrial. I loved getting them all! It is a type of pain that is both exhilarating and stress relieving. It is also sexual, which I enjoy as well, after the piercing is healed. If you are not afriad of needles, you should definately consider getting a piercing b/c it's both fun and rewarding *smile* Find a place where you can get to know and trust the piercer, that is what I did. I can't wait for the future where I will get many other piercings done, including my nipples~! I am so excited!!!! *chuckle*

I had a huge fight with my mum about this when I was 17 or something, because I wanted to get a piercing, and she brought up the mutilation argument. I just looked at her and said "mum, you had me circumcised!" and funnily enough she couldn't think of anything to say to that *smile*
