broken dog

our dog is broken .. i'm sure of it. perhaps he's not actually broken, maybe he was like this all the time. well, he has been since we originally brought him home & that was when he was eight weeks old.

normal dogs can find the smallest crumb on the kitchen floor, the tiniest skerrick of food, even into the microscopic realm. if you give a dog a plate to lick, it'll keep going until the plate is shining like the sun, glossy with health-giving doggie saliva .. if the pattern isn't very deep, it'll be licked off too.

not our dog. you can drop half a chicken on the floor & he doesn't seem to know where to look first. you have to tap the floor next to the elephant-sized piece of food to draw his attention to it. he's not blind or anything, there's no doubt about that. perhaps it's his nose? maybe his nose doesn't work the way it should. there's nothing wrong with his ears, that's for sure. you can start opening the wrapper of a packet of lollies or a chocolate bar & he'll be there in a flash, even if he's right at the other end of the yard, tied down & trapped under something heavy.

if we have some leftovers on our plate, or if the plate is simply smeared with some sort of saucey stuff that we know he'll love (it's a pity to wash it down the sink when the dog can enjoy it) we'll call him over & make him sit first before we place the plate on the floor in front of him. he'll tuck into it as though he hasn't been fed for a week, as all dogs do. maybe he failed doggie school though, because he doesn't keep licking until there's nothing left. he leaves big streaks of food all over the plate .. enough to feed a whole family of starving dogs.

"perhaps he's just not hungry," you might say. i don't think so. dogs seem to be always hungry. if we're eating, he'll look at us with eyes that say he's about to faint away from hunger if we don't give him a piece of the meat from our plates .. i'm sure he'd look that way even if he'd just eaten half a herd of cows.

everybody thinks their pet is special but our dog really is .. he's so very special. we love him though. he's our special dog & we love him, no matter how 'remedial' he is.
