the magician in the mall

when i was about eighteen years old, i used to work in the city at one of the major department stores, david jones. lunch times would always be busy & with so many people around, it would be quite a rush to get lunch & find time to sit down to enjoy it. during the school holidays it was worse because there would be billions of kids everywhere to add to the usual city rush.

it must have been school holidays when i went into the mall that day to get lunch, because there were lots of buskers around to amuse the hoards of people. i stopped for a moment to watch a magician doing what magicians do.

he picked me, or maybe i volunteered, to help with a trick. he had a long piece of rope which he handed to me to look at. i looked at it. by all appearances it was a normal piece of rope. he then cut it in half & showed me the two halves. he'd gathered quite a crowd around him, so lots of other city-goers were standing around in a circle watching all this going on too.

he took the two halves & tied them together with a knot at the top. then he asked me to open my hand & he placed the knot into my open palm. he instructed me to close my hand over the knot, which i did.

i've seen this trick, or variations of it, done lots of times, either on tv or in real life, but i'd never seen it done in my own hand. he tapped my hand or said some words or something (i can't quite remember, it was a long time ago now), & then pulled on each end of rope that was leading out of each side of my closed fist. he told me to let go of the rope & when i did, the rope was in one piece again!

i was astonished, because i know that i had a knot in my hand. i felt nothing moving in my hand when he pulled on the ends of the rope, & there was no trick knot left in my hand. i was amazed & mystified .. & kind of freaked out.

i went back to work & told my work mates about it & they thought it was pretty cool. i stayed preoccupied & freaked out for the rest of the day because i simply couldn't figure out how on earth he'd done the trick right in my own hand!
